Are You Ready For The Traction Law?
There’s a new traction law in place on I-70 and here’s what you need to know.
An active Traction Law requires motorists to have either snow tires, tires with the mud/snow (M+S) designation, or a four-wheel/all-wheel-drive vehicle. All tires must now have a minimum of three-sixteenths inch tread. The former requirement was for traction to be an eighth of an inch.
To test your tread, CDOT recommends the “quarter test.” Insert a quarter upside down into your tire tread, with Washington’s head going in first. If the top of the head is covered by tread, you’ve passed. If the top of his head is visible at any point around the tire (test multiple points), you’ve failed. This means you can’t drive when a Traction Law is implemented during inclement weather and snow events or on certain roads during certain months when the requirements are standard.
